In the Netherlands higher education is generally not offered on a tuition-free basis. The best advantage of studying in the Netherlands is that the government has subsidized the tuition fee which makes it a comparatively affordable option to study as opposed to other countries. The education cost in the Netherlands is quite affordable. Universities and colleges in the Netherlands offer affordable tuition fees and the cost of living is relatively low compared to other western European countries. The tuition fee in the Netherlands for the European Union (EU) students is almost 1800-4000 euros each year and for international students, the tuition fee is about 6000-20000 euros each year. Netherlands colleges and universities provide you with a unique educational and living experience.

The Netherlands provides Government Scholarships which are fully funded scholarships for international students. The scholarships in the Netherlands are only offered to students who want to apply for masters in the Netherlands and short courses. Most Dutch universities have international student associations, or educational consultants which help students throughout their studies.

You can obtain a short stay visa or a Schengen visa if you plan to study in the Netherlands for 90 days or less. To enter and stay there for higher education in the Netherlands you require a student visa. Dutch student visa in the Netherlands is known as a residence permit (vrv) and is required for admission to full-time Masters and Bachelors programs. Depending on the type, of course, the student is planning to undertake, he/she can apply for the relevant student visa. Schengen Visa is for courses less than 3 months and Entry Visa – MVV and the VVR or the Residence Permit for bachelors/ masters from the Netherlands. A student who is planning to take up a course that is over 90 days in duration would need a Residence Permit for completing their education and increasing their stay in the Netherlands. Further, if the student is planning for a course duration which is more than 90 days, as per IND (Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service), the university/ institute is their ‘Recognized Sponsor’.

As an ideal educational destination, the Netherlands offers unique opportunities to international students. On a student residence permit, if you are residing in the Netherlands, you are allowed to work up to a maximum of 16 hours per week throughout the year, or full-time in the month of summer (June to August). International students working in the Netherlands can expect to earn between 6 and 10 euros per hour for part-time work they find themselves. Universities in the Netherlands offer 24-months post-study work (PSW) benefits and EU Blue Card opportunities for students. In Dutch, the most common post-study work permission card is called the Search/ Orientation Year or ‘zoekjaar’. Students completing their Bachelors’ / Masters’ from an accredited Dutch University are now eligible to apply for a Residence Permit for ‘Orientation Year’ which is valid for one year.
